TPDL-conference 2011

From the 25^th to the 29^th of September, DILL-4 and DILL-5 students had the opportunity to go to the TPDL conference in Berlin, Germany. This was made possible by funding of the DILL consortium. TPDL stands for “International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries”, and its aim is to “to bring together researchers, developers, content providers and users in the field of digital libraries”.

The DILL students have attended the various sessions of the conference, including keynote speeches by Thomas Hoffmann (Google Switzerland) and Clifford Lynch (Coalition for Networked information). These keynote speakers were also interviewed on video by the DILL students, as part of the workshop “Linking Research and Education in Digital Libraries”. This workshop took place during the final days of the conference, and featured presentations by experts in the field of digital libraries, and discussions with students about digital library education.

All in all, the TPDL conference provided a great opportunity for DILL students, not only to see the latest developments in digital libraries, but also to interact with other conference attendees during the breaks and social events.

DILL4-student wins prize at EuropeanaTech Conference

During the EuropeanaTech conference in Vienna (3-5 October, 2011), the team of Diego Ceccarelli (ISTI-CNR) and Hugo Huurdeman (DILL4) has won the 2nd prize in the “Hackathon” contest. The aim of the Hackathon is the creative reuse of Europeana‘s content.

The team has developed a visual query suggestion tool, which allows users of Europeana to refine their search queries, by using log data of searches that have been done in the past. Using thumbnails, Europeana users can see other relevant searches, and why they are relevant. The application uses a combination of HTML5, semantic technologies, and (semantic) data fromEuropeana, DBPedia, and Freebase.

Greenstone founder

Ian Witten, one of the developers of the Greenstone software for building and distributing digital library collections, recently came to the Dill 4 class in Parma to give a four day workshop on Greenstone.

Ian Witten is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Waikato in New Zealand where he directs the New Zealand Digital Library research project. He received an MA in mathematics from Cambridge Unversity, England; an MSc in computer science from the University of Calgary, Canada; and a PhD in electrical engineering from Essex University, England. He is a fellow of the ACM and of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He received the 2004 IFIP Namur Award, a biennial honour accorded for “contributions to the awareness of social implications of information technology, and the need for an holistic approach in the use, and the 2005 SIGKDD Service Award, given for an outstanding contribution to the data mining field

Challenges of the Digital Library

The challenges of the digital libraries was the subject of a series of seminars held for the Dill 4 students in Parma this fall. Professor Klaus Kempf and Gabrielle Messmer of the of the digital library division at the Bavarian State University gave interesting lectures, discussing the different aspects of the digital libraries, such as collection development and management in digital libraries and the digitaization workflow (ZEND). They also talked of the Google Book Search Digitization Project, conservational requirements in digitizing manuscripts and rare books, metadata management and the data presentation in digitization projects such as Europeana.

Florence Summer School

Villa Morghen

DILL 4 Summer school in Florence begins on August 24. The fourth group
of DILL students will have an exciting introductory week in Florence to their Parma semester. The summerschool will run from August 24 to 30th, when the regular courses will start in Parma.

The summer school will take place in Villa Morghen
(http://www.villamorghen.com/), in Florence, Italy. There the students
will have the opportunity to learn about digital library users,
project management and new perspectives for digital libraries.

The guest professors are Pat Dixon (Senior Lecturer from the School of Information Studies, University of Northumbria) and David Lankes (Associate professor at the School of Information Studies, Syracuse University). Besides, Anna Maria Tammaro (professor and DILL coordinator at Parma University) and Sue Myburgh (Senior Lecturer at the School of Communication, International Studies and Languages, University of South Australia) will welcome the students and present the possibilities for the internship period and the contents of the Parma modules.

Carol Kuhltau visiting professor on Dill

Professor II emerita Carol Kuhltau of Rutgers University has spent two weeks giving lectures on Dill this spring. She lectured in the Tallinn classes of Knowledge Management, with specific focus on information use through learning processes, networking and collaboration; individual and social learning; learning and digital libraries; and information literacy as it applies to these. Her lectures were based on her research on the Information Search Process (ISP) and concepts and theories drawn from her model of the ISP for developing digital libraries and digital library services in learning organizations, specifically, ISP in the Learning Organization; ISP Implications for Information Literacy; ISP in the Workplace and Education.

Dill student presents paper at international research conference

Dydimus Zengenene, a student on Dill 3, has presented a paper at the Zimbabwe Open University International Research Conference in Harare, 16-17th June 2011. His paper was titled “The Contribution Of Semantic Web Technologies for Distance Learning and Education”. The paper discusses the semantic web and how it can be applied to improve distance learning and teaching. The paper gives an overview of thechnologies that underlie the semantic web, and by use of examples, examines how the semantic web might work and how it will improve the functionality of the web and the findability of information. The paper also points out challenges that currently face semantic web technologists and suggests ways that the distance teaching and learning technology may help.
